Grassroots Sovereignty in Niger and Larissa Packer on Green Economy | Issue #10
Hello, sisters of the world!
A wave of grassroots mobilizations for national sovereignty has been happening in countries including Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. Military uprisings have taken over power and pushed French military forces out of their territories. These groups are facing external control over natural resources and have received support from different sectors of the population. We spoke with Aminata Gado, a member of the Niger Peasant Platform [Plateforme Paysanne du Niger—PFPN], connected to La Via Campesina, about the June 2023 military uprising in Niger, the country’s current political context, the sanctions applied against it and how they affect the population, and women’s resistance in the struggles for peace and sovereignty.
We also shared an interview conducted by Brazil’s Landless Workers’ Movement [Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra—MST]’s web page with the lawyer Larissa Packer, a member of the Grain team for Latin America. In the interview, Larissa addresses the dynamics between agribusiness and environment, explains how a green economy is not a solution for the environmental crisis, and talks about how the appropriation and financialization of common goods like land and water happens in dynamics that subject “common goods and the interests of the population to a strategy aimed at providing financial gains for few families, the world’s few super-rich.”
