Women fight against domination and wars in Kanaky (New Caledonia), Afghanistan and Palestine | Issue #15
Hello, sisters of the world!
In early May, the Kanak people rose massively against the French colonial rule in the territory known as New Caledonia. To learn about the history of this struggle for independence and its current challenges, Capire spoke in May with three World March of Women militants from Kanaky: Oriane Trolue is a member of the WMW International Committee, Françoise Callard is a WMW Kanaky militant, and the third sister will have her identity protected.
We also share the poetry of women from Afghanistan who left their homeland after the Taliban reconquered the country in August 2021. One of the first policies the Taliban did was banning poetry and arts. Writing poetry has been prohibited in Afghanistan since the Taliban took over. For women it’s even worse: it’s seen as shameful and can result in beatings and even death. That’s why afghan women have used poetry to rebel, express inequalities, and also by the feminist movement as a tool of communication.
And on the strength and resistance of Palestinian women and the struggle for the liberation of Palestine around the world, we published an interview with Nasreen Abd Elal, a member of the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM) in New York City, United States. During the interview, Nasreen talked about the current struggle, the meaning of memory to the Palestinian liberation struggle, and the role of women and feminism in it. This interview was conducted in May 16th 2024, in the same week as Nakba day is commemorated.
