Women’s Struggles in Zimbabwe, Venezuela, and Haiti | Issue #14
Hello, sisters of the world!
In recent weeks, we published an article by a World March of Women sister from Zimbabwe about religious fundamentalism in Africa and its impact on women’s lives. “In Africa, the mushrooming of new religious groupings led by so-called men of God has exacerbated the fundamentalist beliefs and generated into culticism,” the militant—who wanted to remain anonymous—wrote. The author draws a parallel between the advances of current churches and new forms of colonialism, presenting feminist alternatives to fight religious fundamentalism and promote women’s autonomy.
We shared the documentary Nostalgic About The Future (2022), a film by Thierry Deronne about Venezuelan women’s organization and work in communes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Amid hegemonic media that persecutes and attacks the grassroots project pushed forward by the Venezuelan people, Nostalgic About The Future fills a much needed role: to show the diversity of Venezuelan communities and their impressive grassroots organization.
And in Haiti, women’s and rural people’s grassroots organization are key in the fight against imperialism. To learn more about these struggles, we spoke with Juslene Tyresias, a member of the Papaye Peasant Movement (MPP). In the interview, Juslene spoke about the peasant struggle in Haiti and the struggle against US imperialism in the current context. This interview was conducted during the Rising Majority Congress, in Saint Louis, United States, in June 2024.
