This week on Capire | Earthquake in Turkey and Tributes to Ahlam Belhaj and Vilma Espín
Hello, sisters of the world!
A government based on the interests of a few, privatization of institutions, and the takeover of state apparatus and civil society by special interests groups are part of the causes for a natural disaster to become a catastrophe. In an article published this week, Pınar Yüksek, of the World March of Women Turkey, addresses the impacts of earthquakes on women’s lives and the factors that lead to even more destructive consequences.
Also this week, we published a moving tribute by women of the World March of Women Tunisia to the life and struggle of the feminist militant Ahlam Belhaj. “How could we mourn and cry when you taught us to transcend and defeat that illness, that bad wolf, just as you have done for years through your activism, dynamism, and struggle in so many fields?”. Admired and beloved by her sisters in the struggle, Ahlam was the coordinator of the Tunisian Association of Democratic Women (ATFD). She fought to overthrow the dictatorship of Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011 and contributed to the process of drafting a new Constitution for the country. The article is also available in its original language, Arabic.
Vilma Espín was born on April 7, 1930, in Santiago de Cuba. As a tribute to the life and struggle of one of the most active fighters of the Cuban revolutionary period, we published two of her speeches about women’s struggles on the island. In her speech “The Example of Cuban Women in Other Latitudes”, Espín talks about women’s struggle for sovereignty and independence in Latin America. In “Woman: A Revolution Inside the Revolution”, she describes the labor changes for women in socialism and their achievements in several sectors.
