👋 Hello, sisters of the world! Check out our new content:
📜 Daydream: A Poem by Saïda Menebhi
Saïda Menebhi was a martyr under the dictatorship of King Hassan II of Morocco, which saw its most violent period between the 1960s and 1990s. Saïda was arrested and tortured and staged hunger strikes to demand that her status as a political prisoner under the regime was acknowledged and to call for freedom for herself and other comrades. On December 11th, 1977 to be exact, Saïda was transferred to the hospital after her health deteriorated, where she passed away in the prime of her life, at the age of no more than 25. We published her poem “Daydream” and an account about her struggle, written by Khadija Ryadi, a World March of Women militant in Morocco.
📜 I’ve Seen Women: A Poem by Fatma Al Ghalia
We also published the poem “I’ve Seen Women,” by the Sahrawi journalist, writer, and poet Fatma Al Ghalia. She says, “With this poem, I denounce the injustices perpetrated against women at the international level and aim to promote women’s struggles and resistance through modern art and a poetry that reflects the ability to survive in face of so much adversity.” Fatma denounced the violence endured by the Sahrawi people and spoke about women’s struggles during the pre-launch of the 6th International Action of the World March of Women (WMW), held on February 18th, Day of Solidarity with Sahrawi Women.
🎞️ “Elizabeth”: Watch Documentary on a Peasant Leader’s Story of Resistance
April 17th is International Day of Peasant Struggles, celebrated by La Via Campesina and ally movements. It is a date for remembering and honoring peasant resistance from the past and present, and to call for global action for the right to land and food sovereignty. To honor rural women fighters, we shared the documentary “Elizabeth,” about the life of Elizabeth Teixeira, a militant struggling for agrarian reform and rural people’s rights in Brazil. Watch it here.
