This week on Capire | Feminist Economy, Berta Cáceres, and March 8
Hello, sisters of the world!
A feminist economy is a response to the current economic, environmental, and social crisis. It is a political strategy to transform society and the relationship between people, and people and nature. To support the conversations around the topic, the World March of Women (WMW) and Friends of the Earth International launched two animated videos that creatively and imaginatively explain what feminist economy is. The videos are available on Capire’s YouTube channel and social media channels with Portuguese, English, Spanish, and French subtitles.
This week we also reported on the seven-year mark since the political assassination of the Honduran leader Berta Cáceres. As a tribute to her, we published a message by Bertha Zúniga Cáceres about her legacy. Bertita recalls Berta’s struggle and thoughts, demonstrating her strength and resistance: “She fought and believed in the wisdom of peoples. She believed that, as peoples, we also have our own mechanisms for building justice, defending our territories, and continuing the resistance that has been going on for more than 500 years.” Berta lives!
And in the upcoming week, women from around the world will take to the streets on March 8, International Day of Women’s Struggles. Nalu Faria, of the World March of Women Brazil, argues that these mobilizations “express the strength and power of feminism and are a striking mark of its reach as an emancipatory project.” In her article, Nalu addresses the challenges facing the feminist movement in the struggle for democracy and equality, against poverty and the control over women’s bodies.
