Irene León on Regional Integration + Asma Aamir on Feminism in Pakistan | Issue #4
Hello, sisters of the world!
Last week, Capire published an edited version of a speech by Irene León, an Ecuadorian sociologist and member of the Network of Intellectuals and Artists in Defense of Humanity. During the regional stage of the Dilemmas of Humanity Conference, in September 2023, Irene addressed historical and recent events that point to a transition toward socialism and regional integration in Latin America and the Caribbean. “In Latin America and the Caribbean in the 21st century, ideas were sown to establish the region as an anti-capitalist power, with other ways of producing and reproducing life, placing life at the center,” she argued. The article was originally published in December 2023, as part of the publication “Grassroots Feminism and Regional Integration,” organized by Capire and the World March of Women Americas.
Feminism is the pathway of struggle toward a world that is centered around life. Asma Aamir, of the World March of Women Pakistan and a substitute member of its International Committee representing Asia, shares her analysis on the feminist struggles waged in her country. In her article, Asma addresses the political and religious context of Pakistan, challenges facing women’s lives regarding the economy, conservatism, and fundamentalism, and the many struggles and alternatives women build.
