This week on Capire | Kurdish women facing the disaster in Turkey and feminist mística and memory
Hello, sisters of the world!
On February 6th, a wave of earthquakes hit cities and towns in Turkey, Syria, and other neighboring countries. As modern capitalism and ruling powers turn disasters into crises, wars, and massacres, tens of thousands of people lost their lives. The women of the Free Women’s Movement (TJA), from Northern Kurdistan and the Kongra Star in Western Kurdistan, denounce in this article the impacts of the lack of public management before and after the disaster and share what they have been doing in solidarity with victims.
Looking back on the past to reflect on the present and fight for the future we want is a feminist task. “The mística, as well as memory, helps us consolidate “us”—that is, consolidate the sense of belonging to a collective that shares dreams and a worldview,” Alejandra Laprea, a militant of the World March of Women in Venezuela and member of the International Committee of the WMW, writes. Her article reflects on feminist mística and memory as a way to pursue and appreciate our stories and the stories of movements in struggle.
