Sanaa Seif, Maryam Abu Daqqa, and Women of La Via Campesina | Issue #40
Hello, sisters of the world!
This week we shared three examples of the strength of women and the feminist struggle around the world: an interview with the Egyptian militant Sanaa Seif; a unique account by Maryam Abu Daqqa, a pioneer of the Palestinian feminist movement; and an account of the 6th Women’s Assembly of La Via Campesina, held in Bogota, Colombia, on December 2nd.
In an interview granted to Capire in June this year, Sanaa Seif addressed the current political context in Egypt and her ongoing campaign for the release of human rights defenders in the country. Sanaa is an Egyptian-British filmmaker and militant. She was active during the 2011 uprising in her country and for nine years she has been struggling for the freedom of her brother and other political prisoners. “There are a lot of people campaigning and trying to advocate not only for the release of prisoners, but also for better conditions. You have to fight for everything, for every small right: to get them food, letters, to visit them,” she says. The transcript of the interview is available in English and you can also listen to the recording here.
To denounce the persecution Palestinian women endure, we published excerpts from the writing “The Return Journey,” submitted by Maryam Abu Daqqa to the militants of the World March of Women Middle East and North Africa (WMW-MENA). While Maryam has written profusely in her life, “The Return Journey” is the only text she has with her right now, because all of her research and books were in her home in Gaza, which was bombed. We stand for a free and sovereign Palestine!
And we covered the 6th Women’s Assembly of La Via Campesina, which is part of the 8th LVC International Conference, held December 1-8. During the assembly, women from all continents discussed the 30 years of the organization, the role of women in the struggles for food sovereignty and land, and the building of popular peasant feminism. "Nós cuidamos da terra e do solo. Nós estamos trazendo mais mulheres que sofrem nas áreas rurais. Cada região sofre de um jeito específico e profundo por conta do capitalismo", Anuka Thirimadura, a participant from Sri Lanka, said.
