What’s New This Week | Women in the struggle for regional integration and democracy
This week, we continue to share our special coverage on the 3rd Continental Assembly of ALBA Movements, where we talked to Llanisca Lugo, a member of the Martin Luther King Center (CMLK) and the World March of Women Cuba, about the pathways toward regional integration in the Americas and how this integration is important for peoples’ sovereignty and territories. Llanisca talked about the current attacks by imperialism against ways of living on the one hand and, on the other, about grassroots practices to establish and strengthen sovereignty and integration between the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean.
We also covered the People’s Summit, a self-managed militant space of resistance against the Summit of the Americas, which is a space that boosts the interests of big corporations and the financial market. This year, the Summit of the Americas has deliberately excluded the leaders of Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela from the event. The counter-summit’s response to it was to include all the diversity of peoples and territories form the Americas in conversations about the US imperialist and neoliberal agenda and its interventions against the other countries on the continent. During the opening panel at the People’s Summit, called “Democracy for Whom: The Consequences of US Intervention in the Americas,” women from Costa Rica, Cuba, United States, and Mexico shared experiences and perspectives for the struggle against the US neoliberal mechanisms that hinder real democracy.
