WMW International Meeting, a Tribute to Nalu Faria, and Trade Union Struggle in South Africa | Issue #37
Hello, sisters of the world!!
The city of Ankara, Turkey, was busy for a few days. The strength of international feminism was clear during the 13th International Meeting of the World March of Women, bringing together more than 150 women from 65 countries across all regions of the world between October 7th and 12th, 2023. In an article published at Capire, we reported on the topics that were discussed, moments of struggle and convergence, and the new agreements and agendas agreed upon for the next few years. We also shared a video featuring delegates from Brazil, Pakistan, Palestine, Indonesia, Quebec, New Caledonia, Niger, Basque Country, and Western Sahara about the meeting and the struggle of the WMW. Watch it!
On October 6th, 2023, before the beginning of the International Meeting, feminist, socialist, and internationalist activists said goodbye to our sister in arms Nalu Faria. “Nalu was one of those extraordinary people that we can tell they are when they cross our paths—with a unique characteristic that Nalu not only crossed our paths, but would stay with us, building pathways together,” Tica Moreno and Maria Fernanda Marcelino write in a tribute to Nalu. They look back on the many “homes” she had–the spaces she was part of, where she worked and which she transformed through her radical feminist vision.
And the internationalist socialist struggle is waged through many hands and in many ways. In an interview published in audio recording and writing, Phakamile Hlubi-Majola, a member of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), speaks about the story of NUMSA and the workers’ struggle in South Africa. The interview was recorded in October, during the 3rd Dilemmas of Humanity Conference. Phakamile also spoke about the connections between the South African and Palestinian struggles for freedom and people’s self-determination. “What is happening in Palestine right now is unforgivable. The Israeli government, as far as we're concerned, is an apartheid state,” she denounces.
